Radiohead: Over $2.25 per "Free" Album
The first sketchy sales figures for Radiohead's new In Rainbows album, where customers name their own price, show that 38% of downloaders paid an average of $6, while everyone else didn't pay anything.
That means every 100 downloads generated $228 (38 x $6) in sales, or an average of $2.28 per album, including free copies. Was it a failure? The way their next album is sold will probably answer that.

It was my understanding that they were also selling 'normal' CDs (with jewel cases, liner notes, etc.) as well as the downloaded music. The whole picture can only begin to be assessed once this context has been taken into account as well.
